Babu Antony is an Indian film actor and mixed martial artist, who works primarily in Malayalam cinema. He has also acted Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. He has mostly done action roles. Babu owns mixed martial art academies in Houston and Bahrain.[1]
He made his debut in Bharathan's Chilampu (1986). He started his career doing antagonist roles, but has also played the lead role in other films. He made a mark in Malayalam cinema through Fazil's 1986 thriller Poovinu Puthiya Poonthennal. The film was remade into Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi and Babu Antony reprised his role in all the five versions. His career highlights include Vaishali (1988), Aparahnam (1991) and Uppukandam Brothers (1993). According to reports, Babu is all set for his directorial debut in Piano.[2]
Personal life and education
He is born to T.J. Antony and Mariyam Antony, and is the third son of seven children, in Ponkunnam, Kottayam, Kerala, India. He has six siblings, Leela, Joseph, Philip, Marykutti, Saly and Mini. He received his primary education from Sacred Heart High School, Ponkunnam, Government Boys High School and St. Dominic's High School Kanjirappally. He was an athlete while at school and was good at the triple jump, long jump, high jump, pole vault, 4 × 200 metre relay and volleyball. He also does paintings.[3] He graduated in English Literature from Pune. He has a Masters degree in Business Administration in Human resources from Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune. He worked as a cinematographer in Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, which led to his entry into the film industry.[4]
He is married to Evgeniya Antony. The couple have two sons, Arthur Antony and Alex Babu Antony.[5]
Martial arts and movies
Babu Antony, a Fifth Dan Black Belt in martial arts, is the only martial arts expert hero in Malayalam cinema to reach stardom by excelling in racy fight scenes. He made his debut by playing an antagonist in Bharathan's Malayalam film Chilambu. His monopoly in quick punches, fast kicks and fluid movements in action scenes has gained him roles. He has acted in more than 160 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, English and Sinhalese. His heroic performance as an angry young man built a huge fan following among the audience, especially youngsters, in movies like Bharanakoodam, Gandhari, Chantha, Dada, Kadal and Kambolam. His portrayal of antagonists with shoulder level hair and a beard redefined the entire concept of a villain. Babu Antony shone in action roles as a hero and villain, and at the same time proved his mettle as an actor by performing a king’s role in Vaishali, an ex-terrorist role in Aparahnam and an impecunious man in Sayaahnam. A few of his films were featured in national and international festivals and won recognition. His last Tamil/Telugu hits were Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya and Kanchana. Currently he is doing a few Tamil and Malayalam films with directors like Vetrimaaran and Vasantha Balan.[6]
