History

906 was created as a split from 616 on March 19, 1961, as a flash-cut, with no official permissive dialing. 906 is among the least populous area codes in North America, serving only about 320,000 people. Due to its low population, it is not expected to be exhausted until after 2048.[1] The area code has inspired an unofficial holiday in the Upper Peninsula on September 6 (906 correlating to the month/day date).[2]
