While  () (ぱら) (yopparau) and  () (you) are used interchangeably for becoming drunk,  () (you) is a more general term, also used for sickness (as in seasickness) or elation, while  () (ぱら) (yopparau) is a more narrow term, referring only to drunkenness.

Further,  () (yoi) refers to drunkenness (the condition), while  () (ぱら) (yopparai) refers to a drunk (the person).
