Etymology

Originally from 御 (o-, honorific prefix) +‎ 美しい (ishii, “good; delicious”, possibly obsolete in modern contexts; the delicious sense evolved out of 女房詞 (nyōbo kotoba, “women's word”) usage).[1][2][3]
