Derived from 紅葉た (momita, the 未然形 (mizenkei, irrealis form) of Old Japanese verb 紅葉つ (⟨momi1tu⟩ → momitsu), “to turn, said of leaves”‎) + (su, to do).

The kanji spelling is jukujikun (熟字訓), see 紅葉 (kōyō).
