From สิน (sǐn, money; property) + สอด (sɔ̀ɔt, to insert; to intervene; etc); literally "inserted property".

The sense 1.2 (law) was probably first used in 1934, when the Act Promulgating Book 5 of the Civil and Commercial Code 1934 (พระราชบัญญัติให้ใช้บทบัญญัติบรรพ ๕ แห่งประมวลกฎหมายแพ่งและพาณิชย์ พุทธศักราช ๒๔๗๗) was drafted (signed into law on 7 March 1935).
