North Levantine Arabic

Etymology

From a merger of Arabic لِ (li, to, for) and إلَى (ʾilā, to, towards).

Preposition

ل (la)

  1. expresses the indirect object
    عم بكتب رساله لحبيبتي.
    ʿam biktib rsāli la-ḥabībti.
I’m writing a letter to my girlfriend. / I’m writing my girlfriend a letter.
  2. to, towards
  3. for
  4. by; made by; pertaining to

Usage notes

  • The personal forms are built from the stem ʾill-: إلي (ʾilli, to me), إلك (ʾillak, to you), etc. More often than not, however, reduplicated forms from the stem laʾill- are used, thus لإلي (laʾilli), لإلك (laʾillak).
  • In many contexts, the personal forms are joined directly to the verb, then taking the form -ill- after consonant clusters, otherwise just -l-. For example: بيحلالي (byiḥlā-li, it appeals to me), بيحقلي (biḥiʾʾ-illi, it is due to me). This phenomenon is also the reason for the above reduplication because the simple forms are identical to suffixed verb forms of قال (ʾāl, to say, tell), such as قللي (ʾil-li, tell me).
