From Old Occitan, from Late Latin lanceāre, present active infinitive of lanceō (throw a spear), from Latin lancea (spear) (from which llança), of Celtiberian origin. Compare French lancer, Italian lanciare, Occitan and Portuguese lançar, Spanish lanzar.
