East Central German

Pronoun

iech

  1. (Silesia) I (first person pronoun)

Luxembourgish

Etymology

From Middle High German iuch, from Old High German iuwih. The expected Luxeburgish form would be *äich. The form iech goes back to Middle High German *öch or *ech, as in some neighbouring dialects of Central Franconian. It is probably due to shortening after -iu- had been diphthongized ([yːç] > [øʏ̯ç] > [øç]).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ie̯χ/, [iə̯ɕ] (stressed)
  • IPA(key): /eχ/, [əɕ] (unstressed)
  • Homophones: Iech, ech (latter unstressed only)
