From Proto-Germanic *haitaną, from Proto-Indo-European *key(w)-, *kyew- (“to set in motion”). Cognate with Old English hātan, Old Saxon hētan, Old High German heizzan, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (haitan).
