From Proto-Ugric *säptɜ (seven), borrowed from an Indo-European language (Proto-Indo-European *septḿ̥); compare Sanskrit सप्तन् (saptán), Ancient Greek ἑπτά (heptá). Initial h- is by analogy with hat (six). Compare Mansi са̄т (sāt, seven).
