Etymology

Gara is assumed to be derived from the first half of the name of Garajonay peak (the highest point on the island of La Gomera), formerly Garagono(c)he, from Guanche *garagônaše, from *gar-g-Wunẓiẓ "Eiunche [a Guanche seer] possesses superiority" or "Eiunche is at the highest height".[1]
