-минать

Russian

Etymology

From imperfective lengthening of the perfective Proto-Slavic stem *-mьn- (cf. first singular *mьnǫ of *męti) + -а́ть (-átʹ). Similar lengthening accounts for the change -о--а- in imperfective derivations in -ывать (-yvatʹ) and -ивать (-ivatʹ), e.g.
