-жинать

Russian

Etymology

From imperfective lengthening of the perfective Proto-Slavic stem *-žьn- (cf. first singular *žьnǫ of *žęti (to reap)) + -а́ть (-átʹ). Similar lengthening accounts for the change -о--а- in imperfective derivations in -ывать (-yvatʹ) and -ивать (-ivatʹ), e.g.
