Geschiedenis
De eerste nederzetting van de stad dateert uit de Saksische periode, hoewel er ook de resten zijn van een groot aantal oudere nederzettingen in de buurt, waaronder uit de IJzertijd: Hill fort Battlesbury Camp en Cley Hill. De laatst vermelde site wordt beheerd door de National Trust.
Er zijn aanwijzingen dat een nederzetting uit de Midden-IJzertijd zich wellicht net ten westen van de stad heeft bevonden.[1]
De welvaart van de stad groeide door de wolhandel in de late Middeleeuwen wat de bouw van de Minster Church van Saint Denys mogelijk heeft gemaakt.
Middeleeuwen
Tijdens de middeleeuwen werd de stad niet alleen bekend om haar wol en lakenhandel, maar ook voor haar grote faam als maïsmarkt (tweede grootste in het westen van Engeland na Bristol). Veel van de overgebleven gebouwen op de Grote Markt danken hun oorsprong aan de grote maïsmarktdagen toen ze werden gebruikt als winkels en magazijnen, of als pensions en herbergen voor de kopers en verkopers die van heinde en ver hiernaartoe kwamen.
Burgeroorlog
Tijdens de Engelse Burgeroorlog (1642-1645) viel de stad minstens 4 keer afwisselend in handen van supporters van Royalisten en van 'Roundheads' parlementairen. Toen Jacobus II van Engeland de troon besteeg, kreeg hij steun van de lokale burgerij en de Wiltshire Militie die hem verdedigden tegen James Scott, 1e hertog van Monmouth. Met hun hulp werd de hertog verslagen.[2]
20e eeuw
Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werden duizenden Australische, Nieuw-Zeelandse en Canadese soldaten gelegerd in de dorpen omheen Warminster.[2]
