Gewone metriek

Met de gewone metriek of euclidische afstandsfunctie wordt de afbeelding ${\displaystyle d:V\times V\mapsto \mathbb {R} }$ gegeven door:

${\displaystyle d(x,y)=\|x-y\|\,}$

waarbij

${\displaystyle \|x\|={\sqrt {x_{1}^{2}+x_{2}^{2}+\ldots +x_{n}^{2}}}\,}$ voor ${\displaystyle x=(x_{1},x_{2},\ldots ,x_{n})\in \mathbb {R} ^{n}\,}$, dus ${\displaystyle \|\cdot \|}$ is de euclidische norm.

Hierbij is V een verzameling getallen, bijvoorbeeld ${\displaystyle \mathbb {R} }$ of ${\displaystyle \mathbb {C} }$, of vectoren, bijvoorbeeld ${\displaystyle \mathbb {R} ^{p}}$.
