Civic Center (San Francisco)

Civic Center is een wijk met tal van culturele en overheidsinstellingen in het centrum van de Amerikaanse stad San Francisco (Californië). Het gebied is een National Historic Landmark. De wijk is 1,27 km² groot, telt naar schatting 10.000 inwoners (2008) en heeft daarmee een hoge bevolkingsdichtheid van 7.925 inwoners/km².

Civic Center bij valavond, gezien vanaf het zuiden uit de toren 100 Van Ness Avenue. Centraal ligt het stadhuis.

Civic Center wordt begrensd door Market Street in het zuidoosten, met South of Market aan de overzijde, door Franklin Street in het westen, Turk Street in het noorden en Leavenworth Street, McAllister Street en Charles J. Brenham Place in het oosten. Ten noorden en oosten van de wijk ligt Tenderloin, ten westen Hayes Valley.

Civic Center heeft twee grote pleinen, Civic Center Plaza en United Nations Plaza, die omzoomd worden door grote, vaak neoclassicistische bouwwerken die lokale overheidsinstellingen en culturele instituten huisvesten. Het stadhuis van San Francisco neemt een centrale positie in. Verder bevinden zich hier onder andere het Earl Warren Building dat het Hooggerechtshof van Californië huisvest, het hoofdgebouw van de stadsbibliotheek, het War Memorial Opera House, de concerthal Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall en de arena Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.
