The song was mostly acclaimed by music critics. It charted in the United States, Slovakia, Portugal, Ireland, Greece, France, Canada and Australia in 2018. West shared a video of his daughter North singing the song's chorus in June 2018.

Composition

The track features a sample from "Children Get Together" by The Edwin Hawkins Singers, which is used as the main piano portion that is played throughout.[2] It also samples "Hey Young World" by Slick Rick for the "believe it or not" vocals that are used multiple times within the song.[2]

West's issue with money and how it impacted the past year are referenced.[3] Wilson and Cudi contribute the vocals "Make no mistake, girl, I still love you" to the chorus.[4]

On June 3, 2018, Kanye tweeted out a video of his daughter North West singing the chorus of "No Mistakes", accompanied by a trio of heart eyes emojis.[4] The video gathered positive reactions from fans of his on Twitter.[5] Users of the site also believed that Kanye dissed Drake in the song,[6] which was echoed in some reviews.[7][8]

Promotion

Wilson's appearance was promoted on his official website.[9] West's wife Kim Kardashian shared a rehearsal video from a "Sunday Service" of his to Instagram in January 2019 that saw the song performed by a choir with altered lyrics.[10]

Critical reception

The track received generally favorable reviews from music critics. Michelle Kim and Sheldon Pearce of Pitchfork pointed out the Slick Rick sample in praise, citing it as an example of when the album's "signature chops prove that Kanye remains among rap's most savvy samplers," and the lines "Truth told, I like you/Too bold to type you/Too rich to fight you/Calm down, you light skin!" were listed by Kim and Pearce as being among the "Notable Kanye-isms" on Ye.[11] "No Mistakes" was viewed alongside fellow album track "Yikes" by Andrew Barker of Variety as "West operating in vintage mode."[12] Kitty Empire of The Observer viewed the track as being "a song whose buttery first verse and chorus [curdles] into a series of self-righteous outbursts."[13] One of the "moments of true, transporting beauty on Ye" was listed by Tom Breihan of Stereogum as being "Uncle Charlie Wilson's voice surging skyward on [the track,] soaring above those pianos like a phoenix in flight."[14]

A number of reviews were more negative. Craig Jenkins, writing for Vulture, praised the song's composition, especially the "booming" chorus, "spectral" bass and diced Slick Rick lines, but characterized it as offbeat love song with a questionable message.[8] Christopher Hooton of The Independent panned it as "barely even a song", characterizing its chorus as "lacklustre" and West's verse as "half-assed."[15] Billboard picked it as the second worst track on Ye.[16]

Commercial performance

"No Mistakes" charted in a total of seven countries worldwide. Upon the release of Ye, the song made its entry into the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 36.[17] In Ireland, it reached a similar position, charting at number 38.[18] The song debuted at number 46 on the ARIA Singles Chart, making it the lowest entry out of any of the songs from Ye.[19] "No Mistakes" performed best on the Canadian Hot 100, peaking at number 27 on the chart upon the album's release.[20] The song performed worst in France, where it debuted at number 195.[21]
