The office of Mayor of Coimbatore, like all other Mayors in Tamil Nadu, has been vacant since October 2016, due to constantly postponed local governance bodies general elections. The next general elections are scheduled for August 2019.

The Mayor is elected directly by the electorate. This was temporarily scrapped in 2006 in favour of an indirect election among the councillors. The process of direct elections was brought back in 2011 on the recommendation of the Election Commission of India.[2]

The official residence of the Mayor is at Venkataswamy Road East in R.S. Puram.[3]

List of Mayors

The first mayor was elected in 1996. As of 2014, there have been four mayors,[4] one from the Tamil Maanila Congress, two from the AIADMK and one from the Indian National Congress.[5][6]
