Plot

The Justice League, joined by new members Lex Luthor[N 1] John Constantine and his lover Zatanna[N 2], plan to lead an attack on Darkseid by taking the war to Apokolips while the Teen Titans remain on Earth to defend it. However, upon arrival on Apokolips, several of the heroes are killed by “Paradooms” - genetic hybrids of Parademons and Doomsday allowing them to also attack Earth, where they kill members of the Titans. Although, Constantine hesitantly flees back to Earth as he watches Zatana die while Titans member Damian Wayne manages to survive the Earth attack into hiding with the remaining heroes put into Darkseid’s slavery.

Two years later, Darkseid has successfully conquered Earth with Luthor appointed as his New God representative reporting to a now brainwashed Batman on the devices known as Reapers being sent from Apokolips to mine Earth’s core. The surviving heroes from the attack blame Superman, whose powers were suppressed due to Darkseid injecting him with liquid Kryptonite. Raven, surviving member of the Titans, suffers from depression due to her father Trigon attempting to break free of her magical born prison.[N 3] After Superman stops her from a suicide attempt, the two search for a now war-torn Constantine to locate Damian’s whereabouts. Etrigan accompanies the trio in finding Damian in hopes to free Batman of his brainwash, which Constantine tracks at a League of Assassins outpost. While there, Damian reveals the Titans' fate but managed to revive their leader Nightwing, whom Damian looked up too as a brother-figure, using a Lazarus Pit despite promising Raven he’d never use it again; Damian reluctantly joins the group.

The group teleport to Stryker’s Island in Metropolis where they meet with Superman’s wife Lois Lane. Lois reveals her plan to infiltrate LexCorp and use the Boom Tube to teleport back to Apokolips. The Suicide Squad, now led by Harley Quinn following Amanda Waller’s death from cancer,[N 4] are used as a distraction to get inside. On their way there, Constantine telepathically contacts and convinces Swamp Thing, along with other surviving heroes, to help them destroy the Reapers. Upon arrival, they are confronted by Lex, who reveals he was the mole “sleeper” working with Lois. The group split into two with Clark, Raven, Constantine, Etrigan, and Damian going to Apokolips and Lois, Lex, and the Squad staying behind to defend the portal.

Arriving on Apokolips, Clark’s team is attacked by the Cybernetic Furies (former members of the Justice League and Teen Titans), sent by Darkseid resulting in Etrigan’s death. Constantine frees Diana of Themyscira using her Lasso of Truth whom the latter stays behind to fend off the Furies. The group then finds Flash imprisoned to eternally run on a treadmill powering Apokolips and Cyborg being used as a “source wall”. Afterward, Batman and Darkseid return. Darkseid orders Batman to kill Damian but disobeys due to memories of his parents' death. This prompts Darkseid to target Batman, but he is saved by Damian at the cost of his life. This angers Raven, triggering Trigon to break free. Constantine offers himself as a host as planned beforehand but instead chooses Superman, killing Constantine. Constantine is taken to the afterlife where he reunites with Zatanna, who reveals she was the one who made Constantine flee as a back-up plan created by Batman.

Meanwhile, Lois’ team becomes surrounded by Paradooms prompting Lois to initiate a self destruct on the building. Lois’ sacrifice breaks Superman free from Trigon’s control. Simultaneously, Zatanna and Raven use their magic to revive Constantine and Damian. Cyborg reveals his plan to teleport the Paradooms back to Apokolips and trap the planet into a black hole. Before doing so, Constantine and Raven combine their magic to give Trigon a physical body to fight Darkseid, and Raven bids her father goodbye as Darkseid and Trigon are thrown into oblivion. Despite their victory, Batman states that 31% of Earth’s core has already been damaged, compromising its rotation and predicting another billion deaths before they can start to reverse the effects. Constantine convinces Flash to create a second Flashpoint, knowing he had created the first Flashpoint leading to the present-day’s events[N 5] after freeing him, despite promising his wife he wouldn’t again and that the world wouldn’t be exactly the same as before. As the timeline resets, Damian and Raven share a first and last kiss while the heroes watch as the Flash completes his mission before their erasure.

Reception

Critical response

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 100% based on 14 reviews, with an average rating of 7.84/10.[8] Jesse Schden of IGN movies said "This film takes full advantage of the fact that it's the final chapter in a 15-movie arc. Its narrative veers into some very surprising and compelling directions, and somehow it manages to pay off on loose ends from across the DCU".[9]

Future

In spite of Justice League Dark: Apokolips War being confirmed as the last film in the DCAMU,[2] screenwriter Ernie Altbacker teased the possibility of a new project related to that continuity. He stated that "the way we ended it... it's really like a tough balancing act: It ends something on a bittersweet yet hopeful note, and I'll just say, people who are saying, "Oh man, we're not going to get anymore of these!" ...you're not losing something, you're gaining something new..."[10]
