Background and development

Pia Mia saw her first concert when she was 16 years old, as J Boog performed in Guam. She immediately gravitated towards the song "Let's Do It Again", and was inspired to remake it with a pop spin as a tribute towards him. She recorded it later that year in 2013 with producer Nic Nac. Two years after "Do It Again" finished production, Mia was in a studio session with Chris Brown and Tyga, when Nic Nac played the track for them. Both artists loved it and asked her if they could appear on the song. She immediately accepted and included them, as she believed that they would amplify it over a million times, and was touched by their genuine interest in the track.[1][2] In an interview with Vice, Mia described the lyrics of the song as "wanting to be more than just friends with someone you're really close with, but you haven’t crossed the line yet." She denied rumors that it was about a one-night stand, stating that she never had one before so she could not speak on it.[3]

The pop-R&B,[3] and hip hop[4] track was one of the earliest songs recorded for her debut studio album,[5] as she finished it before signing a deal with Interscope Records. Mia constantly fought the label for "Do It Again" to be released, which she believed that the song "was my heart". She eventually left Interscope without releasing a studio album, explaining that the songs released during her time there were chosen by the executives.[6][7] The single was released on digital download and streaming formats on May 4, 2015,[8] and distributed to rhythmic radio stations on May 19, 2015.[9] It was written by Pia Mia, Jerry Afemata, George Veikoso, Marc Griffin, Tyga, and Nic Nac.[10]

Background

The music video for "Do It Again" was filmed on June 3, 2015 in Malibu, California,[23][24] and was released on June 26, 2015.[25] The video was directed by Colin Tilley, where Kylie Jenner also appeared on set during filming to support them.[26] Law Roach was the stylist during the shoot.[27] As of May 2020, the video has over 448 million views on YouTube.[25]

Synopsis

Pia Mia and Chris Brown flirt with each other inside a cave.

The video opens with Tyga rapping over an ocean cliff while wearing a multi-colored Hawaiian shirt and white pants, then transitions to Mia waving her arms in a white Jeep Wrangler with two other women while being driven along the coastline. She poses in a red dress, while Tyga ad-libs in a black hoodie. During the chorus, Mia performs a dance on the beach's shoreline while wearing a white dress. She is then seen putting on Beats headphones inside the Jeep.

Chris Brown is next shown inside a cave dancing and flirting with Mia, while wearing a yellow tracksuit and sunglasses. During the second chorus, she starts rolling around in the sand and performing on the beach in a red dress. Several jump cuts are then used to show Mia striking various poses on the beach, before all three artists appear at a late night party in a cabana wearing urban clothing. The video ends with a close-up shot of Mia staring at the camera from the beach's shoreline, as the screen fades to black.[28][29]

Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp uploaded a dance challenge on social media platform TikTok, where he danced to the song on April 2, 2020. The video went viral, with other internet celebrities such as Charli D'Amelio and Addison Rae participating, as Mia acknowledged that the challenge was a "resurgence" for the song.[5][30]
