Diesel Loco Shed, Pune

Diesel Loco Shed, Pune is an engine shed located in Pune, Maharashtra in India. It is located east of Pune Junction, falling under Pune Railway Division.[1] Of the three loco sheds in the Central Railway zone, this is the largest among them followed by Kurla and Kalyan.[2][3]

History and developments

It was on 13 August 1981, the then railway minister Kamalapati Tripathi inaugurated the loco shed. Now it holds around 135 locomotives of which 63 locos are operational with mail express links, (As per 2011)[4] but now it holds almost 200 locomotives.(As per 2015)

Infrastructure

The total area covered by the Shed is 59, 825 Sq. m and the covered area is 11, 386 Sq. m. The total berthing capacity of the Shed is 22 Locos.

Operations

The shed is headed by Sr. DME (Diesel), has about 750 employees in different ranks in the day-to-day operations of the shed, which include periodical overhaul, maintenance and repair works. The locos of this shed were thoroughly traverses over entire western India for passenger and freight services. The operations of the shed is divided into various sections, for proper functioning.[5]

Future infrastructure development plans

  1. In order to home the new generation, high horse power WDG4 Locos, Light schedule bay no. 1 & 2 is being extended by 12 metres towards Miraj end which will increase the berthing capacity by 02 locomotives.
  2. No. 1 & 2 service line pit depth will be increased and steel columns will be provided in place of RCC columns at distance of one meter which will increase he accessibility of under gearing.
  3. Roof ventilators will be provided for air ventilation.
  4. In Works Programme 2012-13 the following machinery & plants have been proposed for EMD locomotives;
  • Simulator for Computerised Controlled Braking system.
  • Test bench for Brake controllers.
  • Material storage and racking system
  1. Under sanction works Programme -
  • No. 5 pit line will be extended up to wheel lethe.
  • Compound wall will be extended.[5]
