Cowgate, Newcastle upon Tyne

Cowgate is a locality in the north-west of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It lies mainly between the Kenton ward, and the Blakelaw ward. The name is believed to come from the gate the local farmers would use from the Nuns Moor area to herd their livestock to the Newcastle cattle market.

The Cowgate estate was built in the 1920s.[1]

Carricks Bakery, which was later acquired by Greggs, was located in the area. The bakery was closed in 2005, and the work was transferred to other facilities in Newcastle.[2]

Lately however Cowgate has seen a huge rise of antibehaviour in the area due to unlicensed motorcycles. These motorcycles often speed around the area along the roads, pavements and the nearby Kenton Dene. The riders speed round on their bikes, often not wearing helmets and clearly not caring about anyone who happen to be walking their dogs or taking their children out for a game of football.

The nearby Town Moor also has this problem, which has been known to scare the cattle which graze there

Illegal bike riders have also known to come from nearby Blakelaw to speed up and down Harehills Avenue, often doing wheelies and speeding across the roundabout on the A167 Ponteland Road, which puts the riders and motorists in danger.

Because of this, house prices have plummeted because no one wants to live in an area which these riders are using as a playground.
