Armenian population by country

Armenian populations exist throughout the world. Although the Armenian diaspora existed since ancient times, most of the Armenians living outside of the Republic of Armenia are descendants of the Armenian Genocide survivors or recent immigrants from Armenia. According to estimates, the total number of Armenians in the world is 7 to 9 million,[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] with less than half living in Armenia and in the self-proclaimed de facto independent Artsakh Republic (Nagorno-Karabakh).

The table below lists countries and territories where at least few Armenians live and their number according to official data and estimations by various organizations and media.

Limitations

Estimations may vary greatly because no reliable data are available for some countries. In France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Greece, Syria, Iran, Lebanon, among many other countries, ethnicity has not been enumerated during recent population censuses and it is virtually impossible to determine the actual number of ethnic Armenians living there. Although, data for people of foreign origin (born abroad or having a foreign citizenship) is available for most European Union countries, but this does not present the whole picture and can hardly be taken as a source for the total number of Armenians, because in many countries, most prominently France, most Armenians are not from Armenia. Also, not all Armenian citizens and people born in Armenia are ethnic Armenians, but the overwhelming majority of them are as about 97.9% of the country's population is Armenian.[9]

For other countries, such as Russia, the official number of Armenians is believed, by many, to have been underrated, because many migrant worker live in the country.

Historical

1911

Malachia Ormanian, a scholar and the former Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, estimated the population of Christian Armenians by the dioceses of the Armenian Apostolic Church in his 1911 book The Church of Armenia.[240] It is the most detailed population distribution estimates available prior to the Armenian Genocide. Robert Hewsen wrote that "Ormanian's figures appear moderate and reasonable, although this does not necessarily make them precise."[241]

The 1922 US State Department document

The United States Department of State summarized the populations of Armenians in a November 1922 document titled "Approximate number of Armenians in the world." Of the 3,004,000 Armenians, 817,873 were refugees from Turkey "based upon information furnished by the British Embassy, Constantinople, and by the agents of the Near East Relief Society, in 1921. The total given does not include the able-bodied Armenians, who are retained by the Kemalists, nor the women and children,-approximately 95,000,- according to the League of Nations-who have been forced to embrace Islam."

The estimates by the Yerevan-based journal Hayreniki Dzayn («Հայրենիքի Ձայն»), originally published on December 4, 1966, were cited by Richard Hrair Dekmejian in 1968 in the journal Soviet Studies[242] and later by David Marshall Lang and Christopher J. Walker in 1976 in the entry on Armenians by the Minority Rights Group.[243]

  3. Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is a disputed area. It is de facto independent, but is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan.

  8. Transnistria's status is disputed. It considers itself to be an independent state, but this is not recognised by any country. The Moldovan government and all the world's other states consider Transnistria de jure a part of Moldova territory.
