January 31 – Milan Metro line M4 opening.
– Bangkok's Red Line Mass Transit System Project's opening.

March

– Blackpool Tramway extension to Blackpool North railway station expected to be completed.[1]
– Honolulu Rail Transit is expected to begin limited passenger operations.[2][3]

April

April 1 – The Washington Metro Silver Line is projected to be extended to Ashburn station via Washington Dulles International Airport.[4]
– Greater Jakarta LRT opening.

June

– Planned opening of the Central Subway in San Francisco,[5] after repeated delays.[6]

July

– Planned opening of MRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line phase 1.

August

August 9 – Tampere light rail opening.[7]

November

– Serbia's Stara Pazova–Novi Sad railway to start high-speed operation.

December

– Planned opening of Green Line Extension to Somerville and Medford, Massachusetts.
– Planned opening of Vientiane–Boten railway, 160 km/h service.

Unknown date

– The third line of Minsk Metro, with automated Stadler trains, is expected to open.
– Several São Paulo Metro lines opening.
– The first phase of the Réseau express métropolitain in Montreal is scheduled to open.
– Yonge–University–Spadina Line is expected to introduce ATC at the full length of line (by 2018 it's only partial).
– Expected completion of Edmonton's Valley Line.[8]
– Due to rapid expansion and lack of commuter train services, the length of Beijing Subway is expected to reach 998,5 km.[9]
– Odense Letbane opening.
– upgrading of Ringsted - Fehrman line will speed up services to Germany.
– Indonesia's Jakarta–Bandung high-speed rail operation start.
– The Red Line of the Tel Aviv Light Rail is scheduled to open.
– Expected opening of Toluca–Mexico City commuter rail.[10][11]
– Amsterdam metro to introduce 24-hour operation during weekends.
– Riyadh Metro to reach its peak length of 176 km (just two years after its opening).
– Moscow Central Circle is claimed to start driverless operation.
– Grand Central's Euston to Blackpool service scheduled to commence.[12]
– Northern line extension to Battersea.
– Barking Riverside railway station and approach to it to be completed.
– Las Vegas Monorail is expected to extend service to a station at Mandalay Bay Casino.[13]
– Seattle's Northgate Link extension is scheduled to open.[14]
– OC Streetcar is expected to begin service in Orange County, California.[15]
– The Mid-Coast Trolley extension is expected to begin service in San Diego, California.[16]
– Caltrain service in California is expected to be extended to Salinas.[17]
Summer – Avelia Liberty trains are expected to be introduced, replacing Acela Express trains along the Northeast Corridor.[18]
– Earliest year stated in which commuter rail service is to be restored along the Lackawanna Cut-Off in New Jersey.[19]
– Expected opening of the Tempe Streetcar in the Phoenix, Arizona area.[20][21]
– Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Crenshaw/LAX Line expected to open after several delays.[22]
