Wokha (Pron:/ˈwəʊkə/) is a district of Nagaland state in India.

Geography

It covers an area of 1,628 km². Its capital is the town of Wokha.

History

During the period of British rule, Wokha was the HQ of Naga Hills District up to 1878, when the Naga Hills District HQ moved to Kohima and Wokha became its own sub-division. Then in 1889 it was absorbed into Mokokchung's sub-division, and remained so until 1957 when it became a sub-division of Mokokchung district. The currently defined Wokha district was created in 1973 when the sub-division separated from Mokokchung district.[2]

Economy

It is one of the three districts in Nagaland currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).[3]

Demographics

According to the 2011 census Wokha district has a population of 166,239, [4] roughly equal to the nation of Saint Lucia.[5] This gives it a ranking of 595th in India (out of a total of 640).[4] Wokha has a sex ratio of 968 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 87.7%.[1]
