Toni Šunjić (Bosnian pronunciation: [tǒni ʃûːɲitɕ]; born 15 December 1988) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a centre back for Russian Premier League club Dynamo Moscow and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Šunjić started his career at Zrinjski Mostar, before being loaned to Kortrijk in 2010. He then joined Zorya Luhansk and Kuban Krasnodar afterwards. Šunjić was transferred to VfB Stuttgart in 2015. In 2017, he was loaned to Palermo. He moved to Dinamo Moscow later that year.

A former youth international for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Šunjić made his senior international debut in 2012, earning over 30 caps since. He represented the nation at their first major tournament, the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Early career

Šunjić started playing football at local club Branitelj, before joining Zrinjski Mostar's youth academy in 1998 at the age of 10.[2] On 2 August 2007, he made his professional debut, in a UEFA Europa League qualifying game against Partizan.[3] Šunjić scored his first professional goal on 3 August 2008 against Borac Banja Luka.[4]

In August 2010 he signed a season-long loan with Belgian outfit Kortrijk.[5]

In February 2012, he joined Ukrainian club Zorya Luhansk.[6]

On 9 July 2014, he was transferred to Russian Premier League club Kuban Krasnodar on a three-year contract.[7]

In August 2015 Šunjić signed a three-year deal with German outfit VfB Stuttgart.[8] He scored on his Bundesliga debut for the club, in a narrow loss away to Hertha BSC on 12 September.[9]

At the end of the season, the club was relegated to 2. Bundesliga.[10] Šunjić, nevertheless, decided to stay at the club. However, not getting the wanted playing time, he was loaned out to Palermo until the end of the season.[11]

Dynamo Moscow

In June 2017 Šunjić signed two-year deal with Dynamo Moscow, sealing his return to Russia.[12] He debuted in a draw against city rivals Spartak Moscow on 18 July.[13] On 3 November, Šunjić scored his first goal for the club, in an away game against Ural.[14]
