Senad Lulić (Bosnian pronunciation: [sěnaːd lǔlitɕ]; born 18 January 1986) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Serie A club Lazio.

Lulić began his professional career in Switzerland, first playing in Chur 97, later helping Bellinzona get promotion to the Swiss Super League, appearing in European competitions for Grasshopper and finally joining Young Boys in 2010. A year later, he moved to Lazio, for which he scored the winning goal in the 2013 Coppa Italia Final against city rivals Roma.

A senior international from 2008 to 2017, Lulić earned over 50 caps and scored 4 goals for Bosnia and Herzegovina. He represented the nation at their first major tournament, the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Club career

Early career

Lulić was born in Mostar, but he spent most of his childhood in Jablanica.[2] He moved in his childhood to Switzerland due to Bosnian War and started his football career at Chur 97.[3] He then moved to Bellinzona, where he helped the club gain promotion to the Swiss Super League in his last season at the Ticino-based club.[4] In July 2008, he joined Grasshopper,[5] playing two seasons there before being transferred to Bernese club Young Boys.[6] After a successful lone season at Young Boys, he received offers from German clubs Hertha BSC and Werder Bremen, as well as Serie A side Lazio. He eventually decided to join Rome-based club.

Lazio

On 16 June 2011, it was confirmed that Lulić had signed a five-year contract with Lazio for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around €3 million.[7] He made his first appearance for the club on 9 September against Milan[8] and went on to score his first goal for the Roman side at Bologna on 23 October.[9] Following his successful debut season, in June 2012, Lulić was voted third as Bosnia and Herzegovina's player of the year, behind Manchester City's Edin Džeko and Roma's Miralem Pjanić.[10]

On 26 May 2013, he scored the only goal in the historic 2013 Coppa Italia Final against city rivals Roma. It was the first ever among the two Roman clubs, and his goal gave Lazio its sixth Coppa Italia, a 2013–14 UEFA Europa League spot at the expense of their bitter rivals, and placed him in the Pantheon of Lazio's top players.[11]

Lulić scored the 79th-minute winner as Lazio defeated holders Napoli on 8 April to reach the 2015 Coppa Italia Final, also making a late goal line clearance to prevent Lorenzo Insigne from equalizing.[12]

On 18 January 2016, his 30th birthday, he extended his contract until June 2020.[13]

He was accused of racially insulting Antonio Rüdiger after a 0–2 loss against city rivals Roma in December 2016.[14] After being found guilty of these allegations, he was suspended for 20 days and fined €10,000.[15]

In July 2017, after departure of Lucas Biglia, Lulić was named Lazio's captain.[16] He won his first trophy as captain on 13 August, when Lazio beat Juventus in 2017 Supercoppa Italiana.[17] On 19 February 2018, Lulić played his 200th league game for Lazio.[18]

International career

Lulić received his debut for Bosnia and Herzegovina in a friendly match against Azerbaijan, which all of the established players decided to boycott following the dismissal of newly appointed coach Meho Kodro by the already unpopular Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina.[19] He had to wait for more than two years, until August 2010, to receive next call-up. After several good performances for his club, especially in UEFA Champions League qualification, new national manager Safet Sušić called him up for UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying games against Luxembourg and France.[20] Despite playing as a left winger at that time for Young Boys, Sušić made him play both matches as a left back, the position where he has established himself in the national team.[21][22] Lulić was dismissed for a second yellow card in the second leg of the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying play-offs, which his team lost against Portugal.[23]

On 7 June 2013, he scored his first international goal, opening the score in a 5–0 win away to Latvia in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification.[24]

When Bosnia and Herzegovina qualified for the first international tournament finals in their history, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Lulić was named in the squad for the competition.[25] He debuted in the opening group game and assisted Vedad Ibišević for Bosnia's first ever goal in tournament finals, a consolation in a 1–2 defeat to Argentina at the Maracanã Stadium on 15 June.[26]

With six assists, Lulić was the best assist provider in UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying, along with Arkadiusz Milik and Vladimír Weiss.[27]

Lulić retired from international football on 29 December 2017.[28]

Style of play

Lulić has been deployed both as a left winger and as a left wing-back. He possesses great pace and stamina.[29]

Personal life

Lulić and his wife Sandra have two children, a girl named Lea and a boy named Lian.[30]
