Ognjen Vranješ (Bosnian pronunciation: [ǒɡɲen ʋrâɲeʃ]; born 24 October 1989) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a centre back for Belgian First Division A club Anderlecht and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Vranješ started his professional career at Borac Banja Luka, before moving to Red Star Belgrade in 2009. In 2010 he had loan spells with Napredak Kruševac and Sheriff Tiraspol. He then played in Russia for Krasnodar and Spartak Vladikavkaz and in Turkey for Elazığspor and Gaziantepspor. In 2016 Vranješ joined Sporting Gijón, only to sign with Tom Tomsk later that year. A year later he moved to AEK Athens. The following year he was transferred to Anderlecht.

A former youth international for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Vranješ made his senior international debut in 2010, earning over 30 caps since. He represented the nation at their first major tournament, the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Club career

Early career

Vranješ started his career playing for his hometown club Borac Banja Luka before moving to Red Star Belgrade in Serbia.[1] After struggling to establish himself in the first team, he first went on loan to Napredak Kruševac and then to Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova.[2]

On 12 January 2011, Vranješ signed a three-and-a-half year contract for Krasnodar in the Russian Premier League.[3]

On 12 December 2012, he signed a three-year contract with Spartak Vladikavkaz.[4] In May 2013, he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear, which kept him off the pitch for almost 8 months.[5]

After he returned to the pitch, he signed a contract with Turkish side Elazığspor in January 2014.[6] In the autumn of 2014 he was on trials with Czech side Příbram and Swiss club Grasshopper, but did not join either of them.[7]

On 2 February 2015, he signed for Turkish club Gaziantepspor.[8] About a year later, his contract was mutually terminated.[9]

Sporting Gijón

On 26 January 2016, Vranješ signed for Spanish club Sporting Gijón until the end of season.[10] He debuted five days later, making several crucial clearances, ensuring his team a 1–0 win over Valencia.[11] His contract had an option for additional season if Sporting didn't get relegated and he played 50% of the minutes, which was activated in June.[12]

However, on 23 August 2016 he agreed to rescind his contract with the club.[13]

Tom Tomsk

On 25 August 2016, he returned to Russia, signing a two-year contract with Tom Tomsk.[14] He debuted in a 0–1 away loss to Amkar Perm on 10 September,[15] and scored his first goal later that month against Rubin Kazan.[16]

AEK Athens

On 22 December 2016, Vranješ signed a contract with Greek side AEK Athens until June 2019.[17] He was sent off in his debut against Asteras.[18] He scored his first goal for the club in a comfortable 6–0 home win against Veria.[19]

On 18 February 2018, Vranješ scored his first career hat-trick in a victory over Xanthi.[20] Vranješ helped AEK Athens win their first Superleague Greece title after 24 years, as they were crowned champions in April 2018.[21]

Anderlecht

In June 2018, Vranješ signed a four-year deal with Belgian club Anderlecht for an undisclosed transfer fee, after months of lengthy negotiations. Transfer fee was believed to be in excess of €3 million.[22] He made his competitive debut for the club on the opening day of league competition against Kortrijk and scored an own goal in a 4–1 win.[23] For getting a straight red card in a game against Mouscron on 17 August, Vranješ was handed a three-game suspension.[24]

International career

Vranješ was a part of the Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21 for several years.[25]

In August 2010, he got his first senior call-up, for UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying games against Luxembourg and France.[26] Vranješ had to wait until 17 November to make his debut, when he started in a friendly match against Slovakia.[27]

In June 2014, Vranješ was called-up for 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, which was Bosnia and Herzegovina's first major competition.[28] After being on the bench in the first two group games, he made his debut in the last one against Iran, where he played 30 minutes.[29]

Personal life

Ognjen has an older brother, Stojan, who is also a footballer. They are the only brothers to have represented Bosnia and Herzegovina internationally.[30]

Vranješ has been the subject of many controversies during his career. In August 2010 he wore Delije shirt to celebrate his then club Sheriff Tiraspol eliminating Dinamo Zagreb in UEFA Champions League qualification tie, which was construed as provocation.[31] In 2015, he made a tattoo depicting borders of Republika Srpska on his left upper arm, which led to public scrutiny. He later apologized and covered the tattoo up.[32] In September 2018 he was sentenced to eight months probation for instigating fan violence over his Facebook page during his time with AEK Athens.[33]
