Foundation Stone

The Thiruvananthapuram–Nagercoil–Kanyakumari line is a line in Southern Railway zone connecting the cities of Thiruvananthapuram in the state of Kerala and Nagercoil in the state of Tamilnadu. Trivandrum–Nagercoil–Kanniyakumari and Tirunelveli–Nagercoil construction projects were inaugurated by the then Prime minister Mrs Indira Gandhi on 6 September 1972 and was opened on 15 April 1979.

The operating speed of trains running between Thiruvananthapuram to Nagercoil from 80 km per hour to 100 km per hour, trains operating from Kanyakumari to Nagercoil from 75 km per hour to 90 km per hour^[4].

History

• 1955-56:- Survey for this line was sanctioned.^[5]
• 1964-65:- The survey completed.^[6].
• 6 September 1972:- The inauguration of the construction project by the then Prime minister Mrs.Indira Gandhi. ^[7]
• 1979 :- The line have been opened to traffic^[1].
• 2012 :- Electrification

Stations

There are 16 railway stations along the stretch. The major stations are Nagercoil Junction, Nagercoil Town, Eraniel, Kulitthurai and Neyyattinkara. Nemom, the second satellite passenger terminal (proposed) to Thiruvananthapuram Central, also comes under this section. The details of the railway stations with annual earnings in 2016-2017^[8] is shown below.

**Note:-

1. Stations written in bold letters - Stations generating Rs. 2,00,00,000(Rs. 2 Crore) or more in a financial year.
2. The criteria for categorization of stations have now been revised to include footfalls at the station. The stations have been clubbed into three groups -- Non-suburban (NS), Suburban (S) and Halt (H). These groups have further been put in grades ranging from NSG 1-6, SG 1-3 and HG 1-3, respectively^[10].

Electrification & track doubling

The Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil-Kanyakumari railway line is fully electrified^[2]. Track doubling work is in progress^[11] and expected to finished in 2022.^[12]

Rail Traffic

Around 35 trains running through this line. The longest running train in the India (Dibrugarh–Kanyakumari Vivek Express) is running through the line. More trains are expected to be introduced along the route with the completion of track doubling.
