The Queen Is Here is the upcoming tenth studio album by Puerto Rican reggaetón singer and songwriter Ivy Queen, scheduled for release in 2018.[1] It features a collaboration with Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Don Omar.

The album spawned six singles, "Que Se Jodan," "Ámame o Mátame" with Omar, "El Lobo Del Cuento," "No Pueden Pararme," "Por Mí," and "Mí Vecina." The only commercially successful single was “Ámame o Matame,” which managed to debut on Billboard’s Latin airplay and digital component charts.

Background

It was announced in September 2013, that Queen had changed management and returned with Jorge "Goguito" Guadalupe, president and co-founder of Filtro Musik, to release her ninth studio album, entitled Vendetta.[2][3] Following the birth of her first biological child,[4][5][6][7] Queen then announced that she would embark on a U.S. tour entitled the "Viva Puerto Rico Tour".[8] The tour, launched on 29 January 2014, included performances at various gay clubs in cities of the United States and Puerto Rico, such as New York, Orlando, Miami, Houston, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Atlanta, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Tampa, and Ponce.[9]

The album, released in February 2015, is composed of four separate simultaneously released albums, in the genres of urban, hip hop, bachata and salsa. Each releases contains eight songs musically devoted to the specific genre. The album received generally favorable reviews with Allmusic's David Jefferies calling it "Queen’s response to the "male chauvinists within the music industry."[10] It featured four singles, "Soy Libre", "Vamos A Guerrear", "Naci Para Amarte", and the title track "Vendetta", which were all released in a separate EP album in December 2014.[11] In September 2015, it was announced that the four albums would be released again, due to the folding of VeneMusic, the project's record label in charge of distribution.[12]

Recording and production

In December 2016, Puerto Rican singer Don Omar posted a clip on the social media site Facebook, of himself along with Queen singing along to a track playing in the background. According to the Puerto Rican newspaper Primera Hora, the song could be Queen's "comeback".[13] The song, entitled "Ámame o Mátame" has become viral on Facebook,[14] with the 45-second clip acquiring over 4 million views on the site,[13] and over fifty-three thousand views on Instagram.[15]

Release and promotion

In May 2016, a song entitled "Que Se Jodan" was released digitally on 13 May 2016. It was released with a parental advisory for explicit lyrics.[16] The song was released simultaneously with "Las Que Se Ponen Bien La Falda," a duet with Mexican singer Maria Jose.[17] An official lyric video of the song was released on 20 April 2016, featuring a two-minute and twenty-six second snippet of the song.[18] An official artwork video for the song was released to coincide with the official digital release of "Que Se Jodan".[19] The official music video was released two days later, on 15 May 2016.[20] The lyric video was directed by Victor Reyes and Team Tiger.[21] The music video was directed by Florida Film House.[22] Combined videos for the song have attained over 700,000 views.

"Ámame o Mátame" was released digitally on 14 April 2017.[23] The song also made its radio premiere the same day on Alex Sensation's radio show on La Mega 97.9 FM, where Queen and Omar appeared on the show to present the song.[24] The pair were to have an interview with Univision journalist Jackie Guerrido, who is also Omar's ex-wife, on the television program Primer Impacto, however this was cancelled due to unknown circumstances.[25][26] Audio and lyric videos for the song were released on 17 April 2017 and have attained (combined) over a million views.[27][28] Multiple unofficial postings of the song have attained over a million views each: 2,480,000,[29] 1,530,000,[30] and 1,310,000.[31]

The third single, "El Lobo Del Cuento" was released digitally on 18 August 2017.[32] A lyric video for the song was released a day earlier on 17 August 2017. It has attained over 450,000 views.[33] Queen celebrated the release of the song with a promotional concert in Queens, New York.[34] On 1 September 2017, the official music video was released, where it has attained over one million views.[35]

"No Pueden Pararme" was released as the album’s fourth single on 24 November 2017.[36] The official music video for the song was released a day earlier on 23 November 2017 on YouTube, where it has attained over 600,000 views.[37]

In 2018, Queen appeared as a presenter at the 30th annual Lo Nuestro award show.[38][39] It was her first appearance at the Lo Nuestro awards since the 2008 Lo Nuestro award show.[40] She wore a transparent black dress,[41] with many media outlets listing her as one of the best-dressed of the night.[42] The color black was worn by attendees to bring attention to gender equalityat it was time to recognize women for their “strength, talent, and rights to physical integrity.”[43] and sexual harassment within the music industry.[44] At the award show, Queen, along with Dominican singer Milly Quezada presented Puerto Rican singer Olga Tañón with a special tribute for being the artist with the most Lo Nuestro award wins, where she acknowledged the recognition of women for their “strength, talent, and rights to physical integrity.”[45]

Tour

In April 2018, Queen embarked on the “Ivy Queen on the Road Tour” throughout the United States to promote the upcoming release of the album. The proceeds of the May 19th event in New York City were donated to the “Rock Steady for Life” campaign, benefiting victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.[46]

Musical composition

"Que Se Jodan" was composed in minor key tonality with the use of vocal call and response. It features simple harmonic progressions, synthetic instrumentation, stick-drum percussion and mallet percussion. Lyrically, it features catchy hooks as well as offensive lyrics.[47] According to the Spanish language newspaper Hola Cuidad!, the song is a "clear message against men."[48] "Ámame o Mátame" features a wide variety of musical influences including those coming from Afro-Latin and Indian sources, while being rooted in the Caribbean. The song features a string ensemble with bowed strings with synthesizers. The track also prominently makes use of mallet percussion and hand drums.[49]

Critical reception

A poll of 649 people by the Spanish language newspaper Primera Hora, determined that fifty-three percent of those polled did not like "Que Se Jodan", while forty-seven percent did.[50] According to the Cuban website, CiberCuba, "Ámame o Mátame" is "Queen's return to musical world" following the birth of her first child.[51] The Colombian newspaper HSB Noticas had similar sentiments towards the song's release.[52]
