This episode was meant as parody of the popular CBS series, Murder, She Wrote, starring Angela Lansbury, who was a close friend of Bea Arthur.

Documenting family history, Dorothy discovers a photo of Sophia as a young bride with a groom, "Guido," who is not Dorothy's father. Sophia reveals that she went through with an arranged marriage in Sicily, Italy, then had it annulled and emigrated to America. Dorothy praises her as women's rights pioneer. When Blanche plans to have a hot tub installed, a city inspector informs her that continuing to have more than two renters would require her to make home improvements she cannot afford. The women argue over who should move out, then make up. Rather than evict any of the women, Blanche agrees to share the title with them, making them co-owners of the property.

After Miles gives Rose a friendship ring, Rose becomes convinced Charlie is trying to contact her from the grave with the message that he disapproves of her relationship with Miles. Sophia later confesses to what she did at Dorothy's behest, so Rose, spurred on by her anger towards Sophia, makes plans to move out. Blanche begins coaching her new baseball-player boyfriend, Stevie (Tim Thomerson) but is angered when he reveals Blanche inspired him to pursue cross-dressing.

Blanche decides to invite Jerry and his mother to dinner to settle the dispute, but it leads to Jerry ending his relationship with Blanche to get back together with his estranged wife. Stan asks Dorothy to attend a counseling session with him, and the counselor suggests Stan is only vying for Dorothy's affection to get close to Sophia so he can project to her the affection his mother did not accept from him.

As a hurricane threatens Miami, Dorothy discovers that Stan is "moving on" with her sister, Gloria, while Blanche and Rose hold a telethon to save a lighthouse. Dorothy later catches Gloria with Stan in her bed, then learns that Sophia pushed Stan and Gloria together. As the storm intensifies, Dorothy and Sophia get into a fight and Sophia goes out into the hurricane.

After Bill helps a frightened young mother treat her sick baby, Blanche affirms that he is a hero, but they admit they barely know each other; they agree to continue dating, but not exclusively. Rose helps Sophia prepare her will, and Dorothy is incensed to learn Sophia has hoarded $35,000 from Dorothy's brother and sister while Dorothy has supported Sophia. Dorothy cuts Sophia off, but reinstates the status quo because she enjoys helping Sophia. Sophia wanted to be a good provider posthumously, but decides to spend some of her money on Dorothy while they can enjoy things together.

Sophia attends Pope John Paul II's Papal mass in Miami, hoping to get a blessing for her hospitalized friend Agnes. For Rose's birthday, Blanche hires a private detective to spy on Miles, whom she suspects might have an affair as a result of a midlife crisis. When Rose learns Miles is having surgery, she fears he is dying; actually, he is having cosmetic surgery on his old-looking eyes. The Pope arrives to bless the hospital's patients, including Agnes.

Rose cannot remember visiting acquaintance Thor Anderson from St. Olaf, Minnesota, who declares his love for her. Rose realizes she once dated him to make her eventual husband Charlie jealous, and admits this to Thor. He steals a single kiss and leaves happy when Rose recalls the details of their first kiss, 40 years earlier; Rose confides to Blanche that Thor is a memorably bad kisser.

Newly promoted associate producer Rose arranges for Dorothy and Blanche to appear on a talk show about female roommates, not realizing that the show is about lesbian relationships. Blanche and Dorothy both receive romantic attention from women; an initially angry Blanche forgives Rose after an attractive younger man who saw the show asks Blanche out with the intention of changing her sexual orientation through passionate lovemaking.

He is appalled by her blatant seduction at a no-tell motel, and explains that he wants to romance her slowly; Blanche feels "like a lady." Dorothy dates Don, Beatlemania's George Harrison impersonator. She convinces him to leave the show and perform his own material, but the effort is disastrous. Rose agrees to go out with Don for coffee, but only because he is temporarily playing Paul McCartney.

Rose's roommates give her a rescue dog, Jake, when her hospital volunteerism gets her down; Rose takes Jake on patient visits. Elderly patient Mrs. Hubbard dies, and Rose gives Jake to Mr. Hubbard so the widower will have companionship.

But Dorothy and Stan had inherited the building and are Angelo's landlords; Stan had agreed to handle all building issues for the uninterested Dorothy. They are charged with violating Miami's housing codes, and are sentenced to live together in the building until it is brought up to code. Stan tries to seduce Dorothy, but she locks him out of the apartment and returns home the net morning after an exterminator eliminates the infestation. Sophia goes shoe-shopping; she fumes over buying the same "old-lady shoes" every year, but Dorothy points out that Sophia finds all other shoes uncomfortable. Dorothy admits she felt tempted to sleep with Stan; Sophia says Stan is a permanent, comfortable part of Dorothy's life, like the shoes are to Sophia.
