They were one of ten teams in the Netball Superleague, the elite netball competition in the United Kingdom, from its inception in 2005 until 2018. It played its home games at Northumbria University's Sport Central. Its final coach was Te Aroha Keenan. The university withdrew the team from the competition for the 2019 season, after which it was replaced by the London Pulse.[2]

History

2015 Season

The 2015 season saw Team Northumbria finish in a disappointing seventh position. Also, the side displayed some excellent netball against Welsh counterparts Celtic Dragons whereby they defeated the home side 48-34, the game was televised on Sky Sports[3]. The import slot was filled by Nicole Styles of Australia[4] and Toetsie Kambatuku of Namibia.

2016 Season

The 2016 season saw no improvement in Team Northumbria's performance. The side signed Chiara Semple from New Zealand who later became an English citizen as well as Tuaine Keenan, daughter of Te Aroha Keenan[5]. The import slots were filled by Jamaican rookies Shanice Beckford and Nicole Dixon[6]. Highlight of the season was the sides televised home game against Yorkshire Jets which resulted in a 48-44 win to Team Northumbria[7]

2017 Season

The 2017 season saw the league expand to ten teams. Team Northumbria signed Welsh international Georgia Rowe[8] as well as former Silver Ferns midcourter Katarina Cooper. Yorkshire-born kiwi shooter Tamsin Moala[9] also signed with the side as their second import after Cooper. Their super ten game against Wasps Netball resulted in injury to Katarina Cooper, ending her netball season with Team Northumbria[10]. Further injuries to Leah Kennedy resulted in the side signing local midcourter Iman Thomas as well as Northern Irish internationals Noleen Lennon and Fi Toner. Chiara Semple was in excellent form as she earned a spot in the England squad to the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana[11]. Some highlights for the season was their home game against newcomers Severn Stars which resulted in their biggest win.

In 2018, England Netball announced that Team Northumbria will withdraw from the Netball Superleague in 2019.[2]
