Sunil Arora (born 13 April 1956) is a retired 1980 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre. He is an Election Commissioner of India.

Personal life

Sunil Arora's father is a retired accounts officer of the Indian Railways, whereas his mother served in DAV College, Hoshiarpur. One of Sunil's brothers is also an IAS officer, whereas the other is a diplomat.[2][3]

Education

Sunil Arora is a graduate (BA Honours) and postgraduate (MA) in English from Panjab University.[1][2][3][4]

Career

Before IAS

Before being appointed as an IAS officer, Sunil Arora served as an Associate Professor in DAV College, Jalandhar.[2][3]

As an IAS officer

As an IAS officer, Sunil Arora served in various key positions for both Union and Rajasthan governments, like as the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Principal Secretary (Small Industries), Principal Secretary (Investment and Protocol), Chairman and Managing Director of Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation (RIICO), Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, and as the District Magistrate and Collector of Jodhpur, Nagaur, Alwar and Dholpur districts in the Rajasthan Government,[1][4][5][6][7][8] and as the Union Information and Broadcasting Secretary, Union Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Secretary, Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Airlines, and as Joint Secretary in Ministry of Civil Aviation in the Union Government.[1][5][4][6][7][8]

Sunil Arora superannuated from service on 30 April 2016.[4][5][6] Post retirement, Sunil Arora was appointed the Director General and CEO of Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs, and hence was deemed to have been reemployed into the IAS.[4][9][10][11]

Election Commissioner of India

Sunil Arora assumed office as one of the two Election Commissioners of India on 31 August 2017,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18] Arora assumed the office of Election Commissioner on 1 September 2017.[6][7][19][20]
