Summertime Ball

Summertime Ball
Mini-festival concert by Global
Venue Emirates Stadium (2009)
Wembley Stadium (2010–)

The Summertime Ball is a mini-festival in London, held each first or second Saturday of June by the radio station Capital. The first ball was at Emirates Stadium in 2009, and it has since been held at Wembley Stadium. It is promoted and broadcast by the Capital network.[1] There have been four different sponsors since its first event. Since 2012, Vodafone has been the sponsor. In 2009, Barclaycard sponsored the ball. In 2010 Cadburys sponsored the event, with Starbucks sponsoring the event in 2011.

A portion of the profit from ticket sales is donated to Help a Capital Child (formerly Help a London Child), the Capital charity. In 2015, a portion of ticket sales was donated to Global's Make Some Noise.

2009

Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and Akon were the headline acts for the first ever Summertime Ball. Blue and Katy Perry were the supporting headliners.

The event was hosted by Capital London presenters Rich Clarke, Kat Shoob, Lisa Snowdon and Johnny Vaughan. The show was sponsored by Barclaycard.

2013

The 2013 Summertime Ball was held on Saturday 8 June 2013 at Wembley Stadium. It was announced on 24 April 2013 that Justin Timberlake would be headlining the event. Tickets went on sale on Friday 26 April at 8am, and sold out in under 2 hours. The 2013 Vodafone Summertime Ball featured the most acts ever for a single Capital FM ball with 21 performers. The headliners, Robbie Williams and Taylor Swift made their ball debuts on Saturday 8 June, with will.i.am, performing at his fourth ball, but his first one solo, and Olly Murs, who made his debut Summertime Ball performance, being the supporting headline acts. The Wanted's fourth appearance at this ball made them the most frequent performers at the Summertime Ball. Band member Nathan Sykes returned after having major throat surgery earlier on in the year, making this his first performance after his throat surgery.[2][3] Justin Timberlake also performed at the event, despite only being listed as a host rather than a performer.

2017

The Summertime Ball returned to Wembley Stadium for the eighth consecutive year on Saturday 10 June 2017. Artists were announced on Capital Breakfast by Roman Kemp the week commencing 8 May 2017. Due to circumstances beyond Capital FM's control, Maroon 5 had to pull out and were replaced by Liam Payne and Sigala.[28][29] They announced 7 acts per day for 3 days and on the 4th day they announced Bruno Mars was performing.

Little Mix and Bruno Mars were the main headliners, while Shawn Mendes and Niall Horan were the supporting headliners for 2017.

Capital FM produced three programs dedicated to this event: on 10 June 2017, it broadcast live backstage from 6am to 3pm with Rob Howard, Will Cozens and Jimmy Hill, then live coverage from Wembley from 3pm to 11pm by three presenters in order: Ant Payne, Vick Hope and The Bassman, and finally JJ ran an "Afterparty" edition until 2am at night; on the next day, JJ reviewed every best moment from the event on his slot 7-10pm. After this, the network moved back to normal programming. Highlights of the event were aired on Capital TV from 7:00pm to 10:30pm on the day of the ball.

2018

The Capital Summertime Ball returned to Wembley Stadium on June 9, 2018 for a ninth successive year sponsored by Vodafone.[55] It was announced on Friday 27 April 2018 that the lineup would be revealed on Capital Breakfast week commencing 30 April 2018. Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello headlined the event with Rita Ora and Charlie Puth as supporting headliners.[56] Tickets failed to sell out until 5 days after their release, with many fans and regular ballgoers citing this year’s ‘recycled’ lineup as the major factor. Many fans took to social media to voice their disappointment at the lack of big name stars on the billing.

On 7 June 2018, on Capital Breakfast, Roman Kemp and Vick Hope confirmed that Camila Cabello would open this year's Summertime Ball at 3:00pm after Marvin Humes.[57]

On 9 June 2018, (the day of the event) Marvin Humes confirmed that he would open the Summertime Ball with an Introductory DJ Set at 2:40pm. Shawn Mendes was announced on the day to close the ball. Demi Lovato and Shawn Mendes came out, as a surprise to be Roman Kemp's guest co-host.[58]
