"Issues" is the debut single by American singer and songwriter Julia Michaels from her third extended play Nervous System (2017), served as the opening track of the EP. The song was written by Michaels, Justin Tranter and its producers Benny Blanco and the production duo Stargate, composed by Mikkel Storleer Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen. The song was released by Republic Records as the lead single from Nervous System on January 13, 2017. "Issues" is a confessional downtempo pop song. Michaels described as a raw ode to her own anxieties.

It was accompanied by a music video directed by Tabitha Denholm premiered on her Vevo channel on March 7, 2017. The song received a Grammy Award nomination for Song of the Year at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.[1]

Background and recording

"Issues" was written in forty minutes by a group of people at a songwriting camp. A few of the others laid claim to the song, but Michaels fought for the song as she claimed that this song was too much her story for it to be given to someone else.[2]

"Issues" was written in January 2016 by Julia Michaels, Benjamin Levin, Mikkel Storleer Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen and Justin Tranter.[3] The song was produced by Levin and Stargate and Danny D and Tim Blacksmith served as executive producers of the track.[3] The song was mixed by Mike “Spike” Stent at Mixsuite UK/LA and was engineered by Dave Schwerkolt and Chris Sclafani.[3] Backgound vocals were sung by Michaels and programming was made by Levin and Stargate.[3]

Composition and lyrical interpretation

Musically, "Issues" is a two minutes and fifty-six seconds confessional downtempo pop song. In terms of music notation, "Issues" was composed using 4

common time
in the key of A flat major, with a moderate tempo of 114 beats per minute.[4] The song follows the chord progression of D-E-A/C-Dsus2 and Michaels' vocal range spans from the low note C3 to the high note of A5, giving the song one octave and five notes of range.[4]

Lyrically, Michaels has described the song as a raw ode to her own anxieties.[5]

Music video

The official lyric video for the song was released after the music video on May 17, 2017. It was directed by Pedro Chaves and shot in London. The video displays the life of several people and several backgrounds. The official music video for the song was released on March 7, 2017. It was directed by Tabitha Denholm and produced by Peter Williams. The male role is played by Alex Koch.[6]

Chart performance

"Issues" proved to be very successful in Europe, reaching the top ten in Belgium, Denmark, France, Norway, Romania, Scotland, and the Czech Republic and the top twenty in various other countries.[7][8][9] In the United Kingdom, it has peaked at number 10, becoming Michaels' first top ten hit in the country.[10]

In Australia, the song climbed up the ARIA Singles Chart for five weeks before reaching number 5 there. [11] It was eventually certified Gold there, having sold more than 35,000 copies in the country. It also reached number 11 in New Zealand.[12]

In the United States, "Issues" spent eighteen weeks on the chart before reaching a peak of number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks.[13][14] The song has sold 1,040,000 copies in the United States as of January 2018.

Live performances

Michaels made her late night television debut on March 20, 2017 performing "Issues" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She also performed "Issues" at the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards on April 30, 2017 and at Wango Tango on May 13, 2017.[15][16] At the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, Michaels was selected as the T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist and gave a performance of "Issues" that was regarded one of the night's best by several media outlets.[17][18] Michaels also performed the song at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards.
