Stephen Dwayne Newman (born October 15, 1964) is an American politician of the Republican Party. In 1996, he was elected to the Senate of Virginia. In 2016 he was elected by the membership of the Senate of Virginia to become the President Pro Temp of the Senate. The position dates back over a hundred years in Virginia and is often given to the most senior or most respected member of the majority party. Senator Newman currently represents the 23rd district, which consists of the city of Lynchburg, Bedford County, and Botetourt and Craig and Campbell counties and the northern part of Roanoke County.[1] Before being elected to the Virginia Senate he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates from 1992 to 1996, and he served on Lynchburg City Council from 1988 to 1992. Senator Newman has served as the Chairman of the Transportation Committee and the Education and Health Committee. In addition to these committees he also serves on the Rules, Commerce and Labor, Finance committees in the Senate of Virginia.

Senator Newman was first elected to the City Council of Lynchburg, Virginia in 1988 at the age of 23. He was the youngest person to ever be elected to his city council. Then he was elected to the Virginia House at the age of 27, and the Senate of Virginia at 31. In all he has been elected to serve the people of Central Virginia for over 30 years.

Senator Steve Newman was married to his childhood sweetheart the former Kimberly Ann Norton on November 19, 1994. Kim and Steve have two children Tyler and Wesley. The couple live in Forest, Virginia when he is not at the Capitol in Richmond, Virginia. Steve Newman is also on the board of directors of his company Delta Star where he serves as its Vice President.
