Shooter (drink)

A shooter, or shot, is a small serving of spirits or a mixed drink (usually about one ounce), typically consumed quickly, often in a single gulp. It is common to serve a shooter as a "side" to a larger drink.[1]

Shooters can be shaken, stirred, blended, layered, or simply poured. Shot glasses or sherry glasses are the usual drinkware in which shooters are served. They are most commonly served at bars, and some bartenders have their own "signature" shooter.

The ingredients of shooters vary from bartender to bartender and from region to region. Two shooters can have the same name but different ingredients, resulting in two very different tastes.

  • After Eight: equal parts Tia Maria, crème de menthe, and Baileys Irish Cream, layered to avoid mixing. Resembles an After Eight mint.
  • B-52 (and related B-50 series cocktails).
  • Baby Guinness: Tia Maria topped by a layer of Baileys Irish Cream poured over the back of a bar spoon to sit atop the Tia Maria.
  • Bloody Brain or Brain Hemorrhage: peach schnapps, with Baileys Irish Cream poured over a bar spoon on top, with a drizzle of grenadine in the center until it starts dripping through. (see photo)
  • Blow Job: quarter of a fluid ounce of coffee flavored liquor (e.g., Kahlúa) layered with half a fluid ounce of amaretto liquor. Typically the drink is mixed in a small shot glass and topped with whipped cream. An individual picks up the glass with their mouth and tilts their head back to drink it. If the cream is spilled, it may be licked off by a fellow drinker. Can also be done with Baileys, Kahlua and a few drops of strawberry liquor on top.
  • Buttery Nipple: equal parts butterscotch schnapps and Irish Cream. The Irish cream is poured off the back of a bar spoon so it "floats" on top of the schnapps in a shot glass.
  • Alien Nipple: 12 butterscotch schnapps, 14 Midori Melon Liqueur, 14 Irish Cream. The schnapps is poured in first with the Midori in the middle and the Irish cream on top.
  • Cement Mixer: Irish Cream and Lime juice.
  • China White: Option 1) Pour white crème de cacao into shot glass then layer on Irish Cream. A sprinke of cinnamon to top it off is optional. Option 2) Part vodka, part Irish cream, part white crème de cacao.
  • Cocksucking Cowboy (also called the Brokeback Shooter): two parts cold butterscotch schnapps with one part of Irish Cream, making it 32% ABV. The Irish Cream is poured off the back of a bar spoon so it "floats" on top of the schnapps in a shot glass.
  • Duck Fart: 13 Kahlúa Coffee Liqueur, 13 Irish Cream and 13 Crown Royal. Poured in that order, from bottom up, over the back of a spoon to create 3 distinct layers. Invented by Gregory L. Henderson.
  • G.F. Shooter: 23 Midori Melon Liqueur and 13 Irish Cream. The Midori is poured in first with the Irish Cream layered on top.
  • Killerwhaletank: 1/4 Baileys Irish Cream, 1/4 Black Sambuca, 1/2 Blue Curaçao
  • Muff Diver: Same recipe and serving style as the Blow Job Shooter served with a maraschino cherry on top. Typically served for men as an alternative to the blow job shooter.
  • Papa Smurf or Frozen Nipple: Blue Aftershock with Baileys Irish Cream poured off the back of a bar spoon so it floats on top.
  • Rattlesnake: equal parts Baileys Irish cream, Kahlua, and crème de cacao, carefully poured in over a bar spoon, so the layers don't mix.
  • Scooby Gang: Blue, Red & Green Aftershock with Baileys Irish Cream poured off the back of a bar spoon so it floats on top.
  • Twisted Nipple: Red Aftershock with Baileys Irish Cream poured off the back of a bar spoon so it floats on top.
  • Quick Fox or Quick Fuck: A variation on Shit on Grass with equal parts Irish cream (e.g., Baileys) as the first layer, followed by a melon liqueur, topped with a coffee liqueur, and served as a layered shooter.

  • Gorilla Fart: pour ¾ ounce (2.25 cl) bourbon, then pour ¾ ounce (2.25 cl) of rum over the back of a bar spoon to create a layered effect. So named because of the fiery sensation in the back of the throat, especially if Tabasco sauce is added to the drink, as is also common.
  • Oreo Cookie: 1 part Kahlua (10 ml), 1 part Baileys (10 ml) and 1 part Vodka (10 ml)

The taste of this shot is very similar to that of the cookie.

  • Flatliner: One half tequila and one half sambucca with several drops of Tabasco sauce. The liquids separate with the sambucca at the bottom and the tequila at the top, the Tabasco sauce sits in the middle of the glass forming a line between the two other spirits.
