Shantel Krebs (born April 28, 1973) is an American businesswoman and current South Dakota Secretary of State[1]. She previously served in the South Dakota House of Representatives and South Dakota Senate.
Early Life and Education
Shantel Krebs was born in South Dakota and graduated from Arlington High School in Arlington, South Dakota in 1991. Krebs attended Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. She has been honored as a Dakota State University Distinguished Alumnus.
Business Career
Shantel Krebs comes from a family of entrepreneurs. At the early age of 10, her family's hard-working entrepreneurial spirit inspired Shantel to start her own lawn mowing business, pushing a used lawn mower for $4 a yard. Shantel continued her family's tradition of entrepreneurship and opened her own retail businesses in downtown Sioux Falls. Perviously, she also had a successful career in the healthcare industry.
Political career
Krebs represented the 10th district of the South Dakota Legislature from 2005 to 2015, serving in the House of Representatives from 2005-2011 and in the Senate from 2011-2015. Krebs was elected by her peers to Majority Whip posts in both chambers and was Chairwoman of the Transportation committee in the House and the Ag & Natural Resources committee in the Senate. Her district included Lincoln and Minnehaha counties. Working together with her fellow legislators, Krebs helped cut $127 million from the state budget without raising taxes. She worked to upgrade crumbling infrastructure and fought for the farmers and ranchers, the heart of the states economy.
State Legislature
While serving in the legislature she was awarded the South Dakota Soybean Advocate of the Year, South Dakota Corn Growers Legislator of the Year, Associated General Contractors Highway Legislative Champion, Association of Townships Legislative Award and South Dakota Farmers Union Distinguished Legislative Leader. Shantel was also selected in 2012 as a national delegate for the American Council of Young Political Leaders to China and Taiwan.
Secretary of State
In 2014, Shantel took on her own party to turn around a failing bureaucracy in the South Dakota Secretary of State’s office. She was elected and sworn in as South Dakota’s twenty-eighth Secretary of State on January 2, 2015. She brought back accountability and efficiency by operating the office like a business with zero based budgeting, audits and improving government transparency and accountability. She is known as a reformer in that office.
Krebs ran unsuccessfully in the 2018 United States House of Representatives At-Large congressional seat in the Republican primary.
Personal life
Shantel Krebs was Miss South Dakota 1997 and competed in the 1998 Miss America competition. Krebs gained media notoriety when she shot a rattlesnake on her back patio. She resides in Fort Pierre on a ranch with her husband and former TV news anchor Mitch Krebs.
