Polly Louise Arnold OBE FRSE FRSC FRS is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh in the School of Chemistry.[1] She is the Crum Brown Chair of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. She currently holds an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) career fellowship, also at the University of Edinburgh.

Research and career

Arnold's research is focused on exploratory synthetic chemistry, particularly in making complexes that explore structure and bonding in early transition metal, and lanthanide and actinide chemistry. This knowledge has been translated into the discovery of new catalysts for chemical transformations, and helping to understand the behaviour of nuclear waste. [1]

Awards and honours

Arnold was awarded The Royal Society Rosalind Franklin Award in 2012 for her scientific achievements, and her suitability as a role model and proposal to promote women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).[2]

She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to chemistry and women in STEM.[3]

She is the executive producer of the documentary film A Chemical Imbalance.[4] She was awarded the RSC Geoffrey Wilkinson award for her work on transuranic organometallic chemistry in 2018.[5] In 2012 she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh[6]. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2018.[7]
