Demographics and Culture

As of the 2011 Census, the population of Pallapatti is 30,624.[2] Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Pallapatti has an average literacy rate of 82%, it is higher than the national average of 74.04%. In Pallapatti, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The main religion followed in Pallaptti is Islam. 99% of the people are Muslims and the remaining 1% are Hindus and Christians.

The people of Pallapatti are known for establishing business and trade all over India. Although they reside in different parts for business purposes, they follow a unique tradition of choosing brides and bride grooms only from pallapatti.

It is the 4th largest populous city/town in Karur district, with more than 40,000 peoples in the city, only smaller than Karur, Inam Karur, and Thanthoni.

Nankanji river, a tributary of Amaravathi River, flows through Pallapatti.

Climate

The highest temperature is obtained in early May to early June, usually about 34 °C, though it rarely exceeds 38 °C for a few days. The average daily temperature during January is around 23 °C, though the temperature rarely falls below 17 °C.

The average annual rainfall is about 855 mm. The city gets most of its seasonal rainfall from the north-east monsoon winds, from late September to mid-November.

Festivals

  • Ramzan and Bakr-Id are the festivals that are greatly celebrated here. People use to gather in Eidgah to perform the Salat al Eid (Eid prayers) for Eid ul-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
  • Those who stay in different part of the country also used to take part in these celebrations with their family.
  • One of the other local festivals which is celebrated here for more than a week is Shaikh Abdul Kadir Oli-ul-ah Uruse. This festival is celebrated from evening until morning. Many temporary ahops and Amusements set up for this festival.

Cuisine

Pallapatti cuisine is typical of south Indian cuisine, in that rice and rice-derived dishes form the major portion of the diet (see rice and curry). Pallapatti food is famous for ghee sweets made from gram flour (locally known as Cheru-Mittai and Mysore Pak) and non-vegetable items like Briyani, Kal paya, Mutton Kurama, Thala kari, Avei Kari, and fish varieties. Pallapatti mutton and Boondhi is very famous.

Pallapatti is located between Karur and Dindigul. Karur is 37 km from Pallpatti, and 47 km from Dindigul.

  • Bus: There is a frequent bus transport between Karur bus stand to Pallapatti between 03:30 hrs to 23:40 hrs. From Dindigul bus stand there is a frequent transport between 04:00 hrs to 23:00 hrs. Also there are direct buses from Chennai to Pallapatti. Connectivity to major cities like Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Salem, Vellore and Nagore is also available from Pallapatti.
  • Nearest railway station: Karur - 37 km and Dindigul 47 km. From Chennai there are five trains to Karur. Daily night trains are Mangalore Mail from Chennai Egmore and Palani Express from Chennai Central. All major trains going to south Tamil Nadu from Chennai stop in Dindigul railway station.
  • Nearest airports: Madurai Airport 131 km, Tiruchirappalli International Airport 135 km and Coimbatore Airport 133 km
