Nu metalcore

Nu metalcore (sometimes referred to as nu metal revival or new nu metal)[1][2] is the fusion genre of nu metal and metalcore that began in the 2000s and gained popularity in the 2010s.[3] Some of the notable groups have also taken influence from R&B,[3] pop,[1] post-hardcore,[4] and deathcore.[5] The fusion is characterized by typical metalcore vocals and instrumentation often accompanied by down-tuned guitars, heavy bass, rapping, spoken word, soulful singing, funk samples, or turntablism.[4][6]

History and reception

Demon Hunter's 2002 self-titled debut album was described as combining nu metal sounds and qualities with ones heard in hardcore punk with its release in 2002.[7] In the early 2010s, metalcore and deathcore groups[5] such as Emmure,[8][9][10] Of Mice & Men,[11][12][13] Suicide Silence,[14][15] and Issues,[16][17] all gained moderate popularity for drawing influence from nu metal. Suicide Silence's 2011 album The Black Crown, which features elements of nu metal and deathcore,[14] peaked at number 28 on the Billboard 200.[18][19] In 2014, Issues' self-titled debut album peaked at number 9 on the same chart.[20] The album features elements of metalcore, nu metal, pop and R&B.[21] Of Mice & Men's 2014 album Restoring Force, which features elements of nu metal,[12] peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200.[22] Bring Me the Horizon, previously known for a much heavier style of music, released their fifth album That's the Spirit, which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200, in 2015.[23] The album draws from multiple genres, including nu metal; however, the band completely abandoned their metalcore style.[24][25] According to The Soundboard in 2016, "nu-metalcore has become [...] omnipresent."[26]
