Mount Perry is a small town and locality in the North Burnett Region in southeastern Queensland, Australia.[2][3] In the 2011 census, Mount Perry had a population of 480 people.[1]

Geography

Mount Perry is about 365 kilometres (227 mi) northwest of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, and about 100 kilometres (62 mi) west of Bundaberg. The town is nestled in a valley near Mount Perry, the area's highest mountain. The Normanby Lookout is located on Normanby Range Road off Towns Creek Road from the Gin Gin-Mount Perry Road. From this overlook the Mount Perry Township and the surrounding countryside can be viewed. There is a Directional Dial.

History

Mount Perry Post Office opened on 26 July 1871. It was known as Tenninering between 1882 and 1884.[4][2]

Mount Perry was connected by a railway line to Bundaberg from 1884 until 1960.[5]

At the 2006 census, Mount Perry and the surrounding area had a population of 431.[6]

Economy

A rural farming area, primarily cattle. Gold mining continues as an important industry, Historically [Solomon Gold] Equigold Pty Ltd and Newcrest Mining. Evolution Mining owns and operates Mt Rawdon Mine Pty Ltd which is a Gold and Silver mine Mt Rawdon Operations offers limited Annual community tours but strictly no ad hoc visiting. Mt Perry has Historic copper workings. The popular Mount Perry Races remains a fixture on the annual Australian horse racing calendar and is visited by many people across the region.

Facilities

A wonderful town to visit for both Motor Cycle riders, people on tour and Grey nomads. An wonderful rural and semirural place of residence and lifestyle. the simpler life for families and sea changers. Mount Perry has an art gallery and a bicentennial museum with active historic Gold Stamper (demonstrations on request). There is a government run Health Centre and a 9-hole golf course. A general store, petrol station and post office (with bank agency), a primary school, motel and a hotel. As you journey through the different parts of the area you will always be greeted with a firm handshake, a wide smile and a warm welcome.

An 18km section of the Bicentennial National Trail passes through the Mount Perry area and is ideal for walking, cycling or horse riding activities.

The North Burnett Regional Council operates a public library at 34 Heusman Street.[7]

From Mount Perry you can head south to the Mingo Crossing Caravan and Recreation Park - one of our undiscovered treasures. This is a great stop-off point, with camping grounds, powered caravan sites, kiosk, amenities block, boat ramp and fish cleaning facilities.

Enjoy the rugged mountain country scenery which can be viewed from the Normanby and Schuh lookouts. The Normanby Range Lookout is located on Normanby Range Road off Towns Creek Road from the Gin Gin-Mount Perry Road. From here you overlook the Mount Perry Township and the surrounding countryside. There is a Directional Dial for you to get your bearings.

Schuh’s Lookout is located on Schuhs Road off the Monto Mount Perry Road at the top of the range. From here you overlook to the south of Mount Perry. The lookouts feature picnic tables and chairs to take in the magnificent scenic views.

CAMPING: Contact the Mt Perry Caravan Park on 0427 563 271. Also situated on Bania Road, Wolca Reserve provides toilet and showering amenities and waste receptacles. Pets are permitted on leashes. Camping is available at the Mt Perry Showgrounds. For both a permit to camp is required with unpowered sites at reasonable rates and power available.
