MS Nieuw Amsterdam is a Signature-class cruise ship for Holland America Line. Nieuw Amsterdam is the 81st ship to enter Holland America's service and the second largest Holland America ship to date.

Service history

Holland America Line took the option on building a new sister ship for Eurodam for the 2010 cruising season.[5] She was completed and she sailed on her first set of sea trials on 16 May 2010.[6][2]

The ship was christened by Princess Maxima of the Netherlands in Venice, Italy on 4 July 2010 before embarking on its maiden voyage from Venice on 5 July 2010.[7]

From November to March the ship sails the Mediterranean Sea and from April to October the ship operates week long cruises from Vancouver, British Columbia to Alaska and back.[8]

On 10 October 2017, Nieuw Amsterdam was driven ashore at Santa Cruz Huatulco, Mexico. Her passengers were evacuated. She was later refloated.[9]

Amenities

New features on Nieuw Amsterdam include a Pan-Asian restaurant, an African theme to the Explorer's Lounge, an Italian specialty restaurant and a redesigned atrium and show lounge. Ten cabins have floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall windows. Eighty-six percent of the cabins are on the outside, and 67 percent have balconies. It also has dynamic positioning abilities, and is powered by six diesel generators and propelled by Azipod propulsion technology like her older sister MS Eurodam.[10] In contrast to Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam features full balconies in its Deck 11 "VQ" spa class staterooms.
