Steve Smith in 2014
Steve Smith has scored 31 international centuries for Australia.

Steve Smith is an Australian international cricketer and former captain of the Australian national team.[1][2] As of September 2018, Smith has played 64 Test matches and 108 One Day International (ODI) matches for Australia and has scored 6,199 and 3,431 runs in the respective formats. He has scored 31 centuries in International cricket; 23 in Tests and 8 in ODIs.[1]

Smith made his Test debut against Pakistan in July 2010 at Lord's.[3][4] His first Test century came in the first innings of the fifth match in 2013, scoring 138 not out against England at The Oval.[5][6] His highest Test score of 239 came against the same team in a match at the WACA Ground in Perth, during the 2017–18 series between the teams.[7][8] Smith has scored Test centuries at fourteen different cricket grounds, including nine at venues outside Australia. He has scored the most Test centuries against England with eight followed by India with seven.[9][10] As of September 2018 he is equal eighth (with Justin Langer) in the list of Test century-makers for Australia, with 23 centuries.[11] Smith reached a Test batting rating of 947 on 30 December 2017, the second highest of all time after Don Bradman,[12] and was ranked top Test batsman in the world in 2015, 2016 and 2017.[13] As of September 2018, Smith's batting average of 61.37 is the third highest in Test cricket history.[14][note 1] As a result of Smith's involvement in the 2018 Australian ball-tampering scandal, he was subsequently banned from all forms of cricket other than at club level for a year from March 2018.[15]

Smith made his ODI debut in a match which Australia won at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, against the West Indies in February 2010.[16] He did not bat in the match but took two wickets for 78 runs.[17] Smith's first ODI century came against Pakistan at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in October 2014; he was named the man of the match for his match-winning innings of 101.[18][19] His highest ODI score came against New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground in December 2016; he scored 164 runs while captaining his team, and Australia won the match by 68 runs.[20][21] Smith has scored his ODI centuries at six different cricket grounds, including two at venues outside Australia, one each against Pakistan and South Africa.[22][23] He has scored eight centuries in ODIs and shares ninth position with Michael Clarke in the ODI centuries list for Australia.[24]

He has also played 30 Twenty20 International (T20I) matches without scoring a century, his highest score in the format being 90.[1] As of September 2018, he is jointly 35th (with Javed Miandad, Aravinda de Silva and Saeed Anwar) overall among all-time combined century-makers, and 8th in the equivalent list for Australia.[25][26]
