Jonathan Tsao is a Canadian politician, who was appointed to Toronto City Council on May 22, 2018.[1][2]

He represents Don Valley East, which had been vacant since the resignation of Shelley Carroll in April 2018 and will serve the remainder of the term until the next municipal election in October 2018.[3][4]

Tsao was appointed amid controversy. Prior to being appointed, Councillor David Shiner alleged that one of the candidates for the Ward 33 by-election had been given access to Shiner's personal cell phone, without his consent, by a member of the office of the mayor. During questioning of the candidates, Tsao confirmed that he did in fact receive this personal cell phone number. This revelation prompted a subsequent apology from the mayor.[5]

He is a resident of Ward 33.[6] He is a former senior political advisor in the Ontario provincial government,[4] and he currently serves as a director of the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care.[7]

Education

Tsao holds a bachelor's degree from University of Toronto, and an MSc from the London School of Economics.[8]
