Verse 1
The word of the Lord that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.[6]
- The name "Joel" means "one to whom Jehovah is God," that is, "worshipper of Jehovah". The prophet seems to have belonged to Judah, as no reference occurs to Israel; whereas he speaks of Jerusalem, the temple, the priests, and the ceremonies, as if he were intimately familiar with them (compare Joel 1:14; 2:1, 15, 32; 3:1, 2, 6, 16, 17, 20, 21).[7]
Verse 4
What the chewing locust left, the swarming locust has eaten;
- What the swarming locust left, the crawling locust has eaten;
- And what the crawling locust left, the consuming locust has eaten.[8]
