Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Pathanamthitta (Malayalam:ജവഹര്‍ നവോദയ വിദ്യാലയ, പത്തനംതിട്ട) which is also referred as JNV Pathanamthitta or JNV-PTA is a fully residential & co-educational school affiliated to CBSE, New Delhi and has classes from VI to XII standard. This Vidyalaya is run by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, New Delhi, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Education and Government of India. It comes under the Hyderabad region of Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are Indian schools for talented children. They form a part of the system of gifted education. The objectives of the scheme were to provide good quality modern education to the talented children predominantly from the rural areas, without regard to their family's socio-economic condition.

History

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Vechoochira, Pathanamthitta was established in November 1986. The school allotted for Pathanamthitta district started functioning in the Government High School, Mannadissala, Vechoochira. Subsequently it was shifted to the adjacent permanent site, which covers 23 acres of land. It stands in full dazzle with the green mountains that surround it.

Admission procedure

Talented students from Pathanamthitta district are selected through an entrance Exam conducted each year by CBSE and are given admission to VIth standard/class in the school. The test is largely non-verbal and objective in nature and is designed to prevent any disadvantage to children from rural areas. Children are also being admitted against the vacant seats in class IX and in class XI also through Regional Level Examination/Marks in the previous qualifying examination.[2]

Eligibility

Since the Vidyalaya has an objective of providing opportunity and education to the underprivileged children of rural areas, the entrance examination has a list of eligibility criteria. They require the student to be:

  • A student of Vth standard by a Government recognized school[3]
  • In the age group of 9-13[3]
  • A student of IIIrd, IVth and Vth in a Government recognised school in a rural area, to apply for a rural quota.[3]
  • A first time appearance in the entrance exam[3]

Reservation

Seats are reserved for the children of rural areas. At least 75% of the seats of district are filled by candidates selected from rural areas and remaining seats are filled from the urban areas of the district(Pathanamthitta).[3] Reservation of seats in favour of children belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes is also provided in proportion to their population in the concerned district.[3] These reservations are interchangeable over and above the candidates selected under open merit. Efforts are made to ensure that one-third of the total seats are filled up by girls.

Student life

Academics

All subjects, with the exception of Malayalam and Hindi, are taught in English in all standards.

The students of Board classes, Xth and XIIth are provided with extra facilities to make a better environment for studies. In last two months of their academic year, they are exempted from daily Physical Training and evening games. They are also provided with tea in early morning and late night. The courses of these classes must be finished before November so that students can focus on studying according to their preferences, for the final board exams takes place in March.

Although tests, half-yearly and pre-board exams are conducted for Xth and XIIth standards too, only the marks obtained in final board exam, which is conducted by CBSE, are counted. The results of class X and XII examinations of the school have been consistently above the overall CBSE national averages. There are eight periods for each standard daily, before lunch. After lunch, remedial class takes place. Students are not taught in remedial classes. They are supposed to do their homework in that time and ask teachers, if any difficulty arises.

Hostel Life

This school is a residential school. Students are accommodated in four houses which are named Aravalli, Nilgiri, Shivalik and Udayagiri. Each house is supervised by a House Master and Associate House Master. The role of teacher is extended into a local parent in this system. The school features gender specific dormitories. It also provides separate dormitories for seniors (grade -IX to XII) and juniors (grade -VI to VIII). Students are provided with breakfast in the morning, lunch, evening snack and dinner. A movie show is organized every Sunday. All students watch movie in the multi-purpose hall. It becomes the student's second home after a short time.

Scouting, Guiding and NCC

Scouting and guiding activities takes place under the direction of Bharat Scouts and Guides. Students regularly and actively participate in various programmes of BSG.

Guiding programs are carried out by NCC. Students are trained for passing the 'A Certificate' in NCC. Students will also participate in the Annual Training Camps and National Integration Camps.

Games and sports

Games and sports are encouraged in the school develop fitness, physical and neuro-muscular skills and promote the spirits of co-operation and sportsmanship. The school have grounds for basketball, volleyball, hand ball, Kho kho, hockey and football. Table tennis and gym kits are also available. Annual Sports are conducted every year and winners of sports and games will get the opportunity to compete in the inter navodaya cluster meets. The winners will then proceed to regional, national and SGFI levels thereafter subsequently.

Migration

The migration policy helps to inculcate the spirit of national integration among the students by making them live with their peer group in a different atmosphere at an early age. The migration scheme of Navodaya Vidyalaya provides for implementation of the three language formulas. The third language taught in Hindi speaking district is linked with the migration of students. In the Hindi speaking district, the third language taught in a Navodaya Vidyalaya is the language of the 30% students migrated to that Vidyalaya from non Hindi regions. Learning third language helps them to interact with local inhabitants and helps them exchange their views, culture and traditional information. This policy help them contribute to strengthen the national integration. This school has migration settlement with Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Uttar Pradesh.

Alumni

The alumni of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Pathanamthitta have formed an official platform NOSA (Navodaya Old Students Association). A Pearl Jubilee Celebration of Alumni, Teachers and Staff has been done on 6 August 2016. School aluminium meet happens every year on first Sunday of August Month, old students from all over the world throng to school to attend alumni meet.[4]
