Hwang Hee-chan (Hangul: 황희찬; Korean pronunciation: [hwaŋ.ɦi.tɕʰan] or [hwaŋ] [hi.tɕʰan]; born 26 January 1996) is a South Korean professional footballer who plays as a forward for Hamburger SV, on loan from Red Bull Salzburg and the South Korea national team.
Early life
Hwang Hee-chan was born in Chuncheon, but his entire family moved to Bucheon right after his birth. There he lived until he became eleven years old.[3] He started to play football in Singok Elementary School in Uijeongbu, South Korea. In 2008, he scored the most goals in both Hwanrang-Daegi Youth Cup and Dongwon Youth Cup. His performance also continued in South Korean U-12 national team: he scored 22 goals in Kanga Cup, which was the highest record in history of Kanga Cup. With outstanding performances in these competitions, he was awarded the grand prize of the 21st Cha Bum-Kun Football Award.[4]
After graduating from Singok Elementary School, he started to play in Pohang Jecheol Middle School Football team, which is also the Pohang Steelers U-15 team. In 2011, Pohang Jecheol Middle School Football Team won the regional and national competitions, and Hwang was the MVP of Korea Football Association U-15 league.[5]
Subsequently, he joined Pohang Jecheol High School football team, which is the Pohang Steelers U-18 team. In 2012 AFC U-16 Championship, he scored hat-tricks against North Korea.[6] In the 2013 Adidas All-in Challenger League, he scored 12 goals in 12 games for his team, helping his high school win the league.[7] In the following grand final series of Adidas All-in Challenger League, Pohang Jecheol High School won the championship, and he was the top scorer and the MVP of the competition.[8]
Club career
Red Bull Salzburg
In 2014, Pohang Steelers intended to sign forward Hwang Hee-chan as a Homegrown Player. FC Red Bull Salzburg, however, signed South Korean forward Hwang Hee-chan eventually.[9] On 3 November 2016, Hwang came off the bench and scored a brace in a Europa League match for Salzburg against Ligue 1 side Nice, contributing to his team's first Europa win of the campaign.[10]
During the 2017–18 season Salzburg had their best ever European campaign. They finished top of their Europa League group, for a record fourth time, before beating Real Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund thus making their first-ever appearance in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final.[11] On April 12, Hwang scored a goal against Lazio leading 4-1 victory to proceed the Europa League semi-final.[12] On 3 May 2018, Hwang played in the second away match of the Europa League semi-final, when Salzburg defeated Olympique de Marseille by 1–2 but lost on aggregate 3–2.[13]
On 31 August 2018, Hwang joined Hamburger SV on a loan deal until the end of 2018–19 season.[14]
International career
Hwang participated in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and scored a goal versus Germany.[15] In May 2018 he was named in South Korea's preliminary 28 man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.[16] In the friendly game against Poland on 28 March 2018, Park put the ball on the score 42 minutes into the second half. It was Hwang Hee-chan's second goal in the match. In the match, they were 0–2 in Poland, but Lee Chang-min and Hwang Hee-chan scored in their starting points, but they lost to Piotr Zieliński in the second half to win 2–1.[17]
