The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is the chief governing body of Visakhapatnam city. Its jurisdiction encompasses an area of 681.96 km2 (263.31 sq mi).[2] It is also part of the planning body of the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority.[3] M. Hari Narayanan is the present municipal commissioner of the city.[4]

History

Visakhapatnam is one of the earliest municipality in the region. It was setup as a municipality in 1858 later upgraded as corporation in 1979. In 21 November 2005 Government of Andhra Pradesh has released a GO to create a Greater Municipal Corporation and it was first Greater municipal corporation in the state of Andhra Pradesh.[5][6] The Anakapalle and the Bhimili mandals were incorporated .

The area of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation is 681.96 km2 (263.31 sq mi). The Corporation is administered by an elected body headed by the Mayor. The population as per the 2011 census was 2,093,876.[7] The Corporation has a total of 95,580 street lights under its administration.[8]
